Emmet Sheehan, a rookie pitcher, had a special moment on Friday, June 23, when the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the Houston Astros 3-2 in a hard-fought game at Dodger Stadium. It was Sheehan’s first MLB victory. Sheehan’s outstanding performance on the mound demonstrated his talent and composure and helped the Dodgers win.
On June 16, Sheehan made his first appearance in a Dodgers game against the San Francisco Giants at Dodger Stadium, 23 Sheehan moved up to the majors with six hitless innings in his Major League debut. Although the Dodgers failed to win the game, the star had to shine in this game after all.
Sheehan showed composure and adaptation in the fourth inning, when he gave up consecutive home runs to Mauricio Dubon and Kyle Tucker. However, he quickly regained his composure and retired the next nine batters he faced, including two strikeouts to end the fifth inning.
Dodgers manager Dave Roberts commended Sheehan’s ability to stay calm in the face of adversity. The young pitcher’s willingness to learn and move on from adversity speaks volumes about his potential.
Sheehan had a more dominant slider in his second outing, taking advantage of the Astros’ swings and making 12 swings and misses compared to only four in his debut. Opponents struggled to make contact with Sheehan’s four-seam fastball, emphasizing the versatility of his repertoire.
Sheehan’s outstanding performance has secured him a spot in the Dodgers’ rotation for some time to come. After Sheehan, Michael Grove pitched two shutout innings in relief and Broussard Graterol pitched a ninth inning to ensure the Dodgers’ third consecutive win. The team’s pitching and defense have been key to their recent success, allowing only two runs in their last three games.
